Well it's been a while since I posted an update on this blog and it's all down to my health and not particularly good health! First problem, about 13 years ago I had bowel cancer which was discovered due to the bowel screening programme that is run by the NHS, without this I doubt I would still be here, anyway after an operation and the removal of the cancerous bowel I got a clean bill of health and life continued. The screening tests come out every 3 years I think it is and I do it as a matter of course and the last one has come back as positive for something dodgy, not again! Anyway went up to Raigmore hospital in Inverness and got a colonoscopy which showed a rather large polyp that the surgeon reckons could turn nasty, so a biopsy and a CT scan was done that day, good news is that it is not cancerous nor is the bowel around it, they still want to get rid of it but it is a pretty minor procedure so all good on that front.
The second health problem is not so good news though, at the end of August start of September my lymph nodes got swollen, went down, swelled up, went down and finally swelled up again and stayed that way, so of to my local GP who took blood samples and passed it onto Raigmore hospital, ENT got in touch so it was up to see a specialist. Then it was a round of tests, ultrascan, biopsy, MRI and another CT scan, all done and dusted I went up and saw my ENT specialist and was told I have a small cancerous tumour on the underside of my tongue! Good news is it is small and not growing and has not spread to my throat or my chest as they can do, and since then it has been a steady trip up to Inverness to see dentists, dietician, speech therapist, my own nurse and at the start of the year my oncologist who will tell me what is due to happen and when.
My nurse filled me in on what is going to happen and the ENT specialist also let me know the procedure, the oncologist will tell me the time scale which works out at 4 weeks Monday to Friday of Radiotherapy followed by 2 weeks Monday to Friday of chemotherapy, when that is done and dusted I should be clear and that little parasite should have gone for good. Sounds by all accounts that I have a hard slog for a couple of months at the start of the year but the prognosis is good and for that I am one happy wargamer! After this is done I go back to ENT and go to the specialists Thursday clinic for 5 years!,can't fault the after care that's for sure.
So a bit of a shock and a bit to take in but everyone has been so nice and allayed any fears that I am about to shuffle off, thing is apart from the swollen neck I feel great! good appetite, still fit and healthy, which I suppose is good for the forthcoming treatment.
All this has kind off put my hobby time to a real premium and I have done really nothing at all, my main hobby time has been following and reading all my favourite blogs and this has kept me going nicely, I will have a bit of time of work but don't really know if I will be up for doing any painting or gaming, just have to see how it goes. This is my last year at work as I am retiring at the end of the year and now I am going to miss 2-3 months of the start of the year there too, they have been great and it is a weight of the mind not having to worry about that.
Well not the last post of the year I wanted to make but it's a good prognosis and it's not going to put me under so it's just a case of onwards and upwards and see what's what at the end of it all. Good thing is I am a pretty positive person and don't get depressed easily so in a good place with good friends and family around me all should end well. I may not post too much here for a while but I will still be reading and posting on all the blogs I follow ou there, so keep me entertained folks!!
Donnie, I wish you the best as you tackle all of these life interrupters. Hopefully all will go well and that you will be back on your feet in no time all. Very encouraging that both maladies were detected early and treatment plans are in place. This whole ordeal will be made easier due to your positive outlook and fitness.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jon, yes early detection is the thing that's for sure, thankfully depression is a thing I have never really encountered so make it a lot easier for me I think, great believer in the old cliche "It is what it is" Even if my gaming activities are limited to reading all the great blogs out there, that will keep me going.
DeleteThank god for the screening, they pick up so much early and can act on it. I'm pleased the NHS is taking good care of you, hopefully you'll be back to wargaming before you know it.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed Neil for a speedy and easy treatment and so many projects piling up I need it to be!!
DeleteWhilst you don't have your sorrows to seek, Donnie, you give a picture of hope for better days. I hope that this continues to sustain you and know that my thoughts are with you and for a speedy resolution.
ReplyDeleteAll the best, Donnie.
Many thanks Richard, hopefully it will be done and dusted by mid year and I can move on, the lead pile wont paint itself that's for sure!!
DeleteThank gawd for the NHS, Donnie. Where would we all be without it?
ReplyDeleteHopfully by the middle of 2026 you'll be fighting fit ready to retire!
Stay well.
Indeed Ray, everyone I have dealt with has just been the best, cracking bunch of people, retirement looks a sweet way to end the next year that's for sure!
DeleteOh, that's truly unfortunate... I admire your attitude and optimism (and rightly so!). It would have devastated many people.
ReplyDeleteSending you lots of positive energy to continue fighting!
Thank you Michal, looking forward to putting it all behind me!
DeleteBloody hell Donnie, I’m very sad to hear of your recent health problems. A positive attitude is a major advantage they tell me, so try and keep your pecker up!
ReplyDeleteCheers JBM, I am glad I have a positive outlook and think it will get me through it nicely. My pecker might be the least of my problems!!
DeleteGood luck with the treatment and with any wargaming activities you are able to find the time for.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Peter, hopefully will get something done in the down time, should manage something!
DeleteI am glad to hear it is all manageable. I hope 2026 sees the return of "The Mojo". It is a times likes these that you realise the importance of those around you.
ReplyDeleteShould be all good Matt and hopefully 2026 will be a good one on the hobby front.
DeleteThat is tough news Donnie, it sounds like you are getting good advice and treatment, let’s hope your recovery is speedy and you can get back to gaming soon 👍
ReplyDeleteCan't fault the people I am dealing with, so upbeat and so very nice, gives you a lot of confidence, be glad to see the back of it though!
DeleteWow! So sorry to hear. Stay strong and recover so that you can be back hobbying again soon!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Mike, fingers crossed to get some gaming in soon!
DeleteSorry to read all this Donnie, I have been getting a regular colonoscopy for about 10 years (I have had 5 in total I think) because my dad died of bowel cancer aged 61 (I am now 63) and I am lucky enough to have a private health plan as part of my remuneration at work - otherwise, I would probably have had to wait till I turned 60 to get the publicly funded "poo" test. As some polyps were removed when I had the first procedure ten years ago (none cancerous) and a few every time since - who knows what state they might have reached if left alone till I was 60.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, sounds like the much maligned NHS has done you proud and hopefully they sort out the latest challenge too. the name of the hospital reminded me I once knew a girl who lived in Raigmore Place in Ft William :)
Many thanks Keith, you certainly can't be too careful with bowel testing, a guy I work with has an appointment later this month due to his test coming back with a query on it, he would have been none the wiser without the test. Ah good old Fort William, my ex wife used to work down there and we spent a fair bit of time over our married years down there, haven't been there in years, nice part of the world though. Anyway it is all kicking of for me this coming week so fingers crossed for a quick recovery and onwards and upwards!!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear all the tough news Donnie. Don't give up hope and fight every step of the way. Find what gives you joy- and pursue it. Life is too short. I've been battling advanced metastatic prostate cancer since 2011. I shouldn't be here and my oncological team who look after me can't quite believe it either. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks John, I am a positive person so am in fine spirits, your own story certainly is very inspirational, just goes to show what a bit of fight can give you, may your own fight continue for many more years to come, thank you for sharing.
DeleteTough news, you seem to be coping as well as possible, thank the lord for screening!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Cheers Iain, a bit of luck on your side is always handy!! The whole treatment thing kicks of tomorrow so we shall see how it goes.
