As the title says it was interesting but not always in a good way!! Since early January I have been, as I said in the previous post, undergoing treatment for neck cancer. Good news is that the treatment i over and they all seem happy with the results but I will find out in a couple of weeks when I see my oncologist.
The radiotherapy went well enough and I had no real problems with it other than a plethora of side effects which are not overly pleasant! The chemotherapy on the other hand was pretty brutal, the first blast anyway. result in my kidneys dropping to under 75% and me going into hospital for a week while they sorted me out!! I must admit I never felt so ill in my life, really bad but the hospital did a grand job on getting me back on my feet.
Side effects have been a bit brutal, doctor told me all about them before I started and I think I got every one of them!! Worst is no taste, really grim, everything tastes like mud, really disgusting and has resulted in me being on a feeding tube for all my water and nutrients, bit of a pain but it is ok. Taste is beginning to come back but very slowly, my sense of smell is fine which means I can smell everything my good lady is cooking for her dinner, pure torture, smell great but taste....... Hopefully this will end soon and I can get back to eating normally, fingers crossed. One of the other side effects is that my facial hair has died! Not too sure if it will ever come back, bar for the odd bit no shaving required!
Well as you can imagine hobby time has been zero and it is only now I am back to looking at blogs and plotting and planning, mojo is good but chance of getting thing done is low at the moment, so reading blogs and planning will have to suffice for the moment.
Anyway another week of recovery then I have a week of clinics before I see the doctor for her views on how it all went. Well I am back to a certain extent and looking forward to getting back to normality, big year for me this year as I am looking to retire at the end of it, so plenty of plans for my hobby time in this year and hopefully the future,
Next post will be more hobby centred I promise!!!
I'm pleased the treatment is over for you Donnie. It sounds brutal and keeping fingers crossed for your results
ReplyDeleteCheer Neil, they all seem pretty happy with how it went, just need to hear it from the doc!!
DeleteGood to hear your progress Donnie and hopefully the road to recovery. A tough time, my only really close experience with cancer was vicariously through my wife and treatment was a period we would both prefer to forget. Dig in and hopefully better times 👍
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Matt, my second brush with it and hopefully I never get a third!! Better times just around the corner I hope!
DeleteVery encouraging to see that you made it through your trying ordeal. Looks like life may be returning to something resembling normality. I sure hope so. Good to see that you are strong enough to return to the hobby. Best wishes.
ReplyDeleteCheers Jon, it has been good to finally get back into it, I just didn't have the energy to do it but feel that I am in a good place and looking forward to getting really back into it.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to hear about the encouraging news in this post, Donnie. Wishing you all the best and that the news continues to be positive.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Richard, hopefully it will be all behind me soon enough.
DeleteSo pleased to hear that you are making progress on the health front. Just take it easy for a bit eh, there’s a good chap.
ReplyDeleteCheers JBM, yes I take a walk in the morning to get my stamina back to some semblance of where it was then it is relax for the rest of the day.
DeleteLong may the good news continue.
ReplyDeleteCheers Matt, hope it does!!
DeleteIt's really good news so far Donnie so hopefully the consultant agrees. Retirement this year, now THAT is something to look forward to!
ReplyDeleteSure is Keith, really looking forward to it, plenty to keep me occupied!!
DeleteDonnie, good to see you posting again. Highlanders are fighters! My kidneys only work at fifty percent, had to cut back on sodium, but my body adjusted. Best wishes to you.
ReplyDeleteMichael
Many thanks for the kind wishes Michael, luckily for me my kidneys are back to normal, hopefully my taste will follow soon!!
DeleteFingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteWaiting for new hobby post sir!
Many thanks Michal, really looking forward to getting something done after a lengthy break,
DeleteBest wishes on a full recovery. Sadly, I can relate to the side effects of chemo. All I will add is Carpe Diem
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for the kind wishes, yes it is pretty brutal, not pleasant at all, onwards and upwards!!
DeleteI'm very pleased that you're well on the road to recovery, Donnie. Its really good to hear a bit of good news for once. Keep doing what you're doing is obviously working.
ReplyDeleteCheers Ray, every day gets that wee bit better!!
DeleteGreat news, sounds terrible but hopefully it seems like youre through the worst of it, looking forward to some hobby news when youre up to it!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Many thanks Iain, I can see wee bits of improvement every day, which is really good. Plotting and planning going on, can't make my mind up what to do but I think a new project will invigorate me!! That's my excuse anyway!!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you are almost out of the woods. My lack of comments is due to you blog being one I cannot comment on via tablet - only via laptop which is only at weekend.
ReplyDeleteHope the improvement continues. Remember you are welcome on the VWC anytime.
Neil
Many thanks Neil, getting better as the days go by, little bit at a time. I really must get my act together when fit and join in on the VWC.
DeleteGee Donnie, you have been through the ringer! I appreciate even more your recent comment on a post of mine!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on getting through so much already. It sounds, though, like there is a brilliant, bright light at the end of this tunnel, one that is becoming more visible and getting brighter by the day. Very best of wishes, James
Thanks James, things getting better as the days go in, beginning to feel a bit more normal, so all good! Life getting better all the time.
