In the doldrums!!

I have had the past week off work and found myself busy in the garden, an odd day out and some really good relaxation time, great stuff but a whole week off and a paint brush not lifted once!! I pored over blogs, read a couple of articles, skimmed through some books for some ideas for games etc but not one figure painted or even primed, just no enthusiasm and it really seems like a missed chance to get something done and off the table, very disappointing.  I very rarely go through periods like this but can find no enthusiasm to pick up a brush and dab some paint on but hopefully this will pass and I can get on and get something completed.

Yesterday I got some miniatures on the table to see where I am at with a couple of different things.

Some Minden British infantry that were actually done a while ago, they will eventually be part of a 16 man unit but I have found out that I have the other figures but no standard bearers! Really annoying to say the least!

A nine man squadron of French Hussars but destined to be something different. I have three different French Hussars so don't really need another one so these ones will be repurposed to another nation, not quite sure what one yet, possibly Prussian but may go with an Austrian Grenzer Hussar regiment, something a wee bit different, they won't be quite accurate but will do what I want them for and on the table should pass well enough.

A six man British Horse Grenadier squadron and some British Horse in the background, I also have some Dragoons to do as well, these cavalry figures will do for both my WAS and SYW projects.

A couple of Saxon Cuirassier squadrons and you can just see some Saxon infantry, there is three sixteen man ones to do. When done this will give me eight sixteen man regiments which will be enough. I need some more cavalry some Dragoons and maybe a squadron of Uhlans, then it will be som command stands to finish off.

So there you have it tonnes to do and plenty of figures to paint up all I need now is the enthusiasm to get myself into gear and crack on, back to work this week so maybe this weekend will be the time to reignite these projects, here's hoping!!

  1. Perhaps you just needed some true R&R with the week off work? Hobby Energy may return when your free time is once again condensed due to work.

  2. I can understand your feeling of regret at a missed opportunity, Donnie - but if you didn't feel like painting, no point in forcing yourself - it's a hobby and supposed to be fun, after all!
With all your collecting and painting, who do you game with - are there other wargamers locally or are you mainly playing solo?

    1. I am pretty much a solo gamer Keith, there is a club a few miles away from me but work etc, means getting to it is a logistical nightmare so usually solo gaming although I must try and do that more, should be taking a leaf out of your book and put a day aside to try and get a game in.

  3. I often have periods like this Donnie.sometimes just reading a book, a conversation, reading a blog etc and interest will suddenly spark and figures get painted

  4. Time spent resting up and recharging always is valuable. Just reviewing the possibilities for painting can reward you.

    1. I did enjoy pulling open boxes to see what was in them I must admit and had a fair morning doing just that.

  5. You and I must share the same muse. Everytime I look at your choices it reminds me of my own. Hopefully she will touch you again and you will be painting like crazy.

  7. We all need a rest sometimes. I am sure the mojo will return, I too have been in the garden with some beautiful weather here up north, with travelling to London I won’t be getting any painting done for a while 🙁

  8. Sometimes you just need a break to get those painting juices flowing again. I'm sure you'll be painting again soon, certainly looks and sounds like you've a few things in mind?

  9. Indeed Ray, I am sure it will all come together again and I have plenty to do once it does come back.

  10. Echoing all the above, there is much more to life than our hobby. It is just that - a hobby. We all need time out of production line painting and spend time in the outside world, even more so with family if you have them. The urge always returns to paint "just one more unit" because... . Due to multiple reasons, I stopped my hobby in 1979 and only returned after I retired and how the hobby had changed. Now I am just running out of storage space.

    BTW, I love gardening too.

    1. Yes it is very true Chris, I dropped out of the hobby for many years and it was only due to time on my hands during an illness I had that led me back into it, glad I did ! Weather is due to change here for the weekend so I should get a bit done, maybe a bit of basing to ease me back into it!
